Trade union officer attacked on picket line

9th March 2018
We are aware of an incident last week where a trade union officer on an official strike picket line came under attack by a group of people, allegedly for having attended one of our meetings. Footage shows the woman being violently and verbally abused and intimidated. We are in touch with the woman and she tells us the matter is being take up within the trade union movement. We expect more details to be made public in the next few days.
We absolutely condemn this attack which is an attempt to threaten, harass and intimidate women who want to be part of discussions on sex, gender and the proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act. We call on everyone, wherever you stand on the issue itself, to support the right of people to discuss it free from fear or threat of violence.
We will continue to hold meetings where such discussions take place. Our next meeting is in Birmingham on Thursday 15th March. Other meetings are scheduled in Cardiff (12th April) and Oxford (25th April). We will not be deterred.

We believe that it is important to share a range of viewpoints on women’s rights and advancement from different perspectives. WPUK does not necessarily agree or endorse all the views that we share.
